Let me back track to March 2009. Here I was, trying to develop a keyword strategy that would help Star Content, LLC obtain the best organic SEO results possible post-launch. During that time, I was freaking out because as a new company entering into the search engine marketing industry, I was unsure of where I would place in search engines, like Google. I felt overwhelmed by my competitors and was thinking, “How do I replicate what they’re doing?” and “Do I need to take the same approach?”

By focusing so heavily on what everyone else was doing, I lost sight of what I was doing, and then I lost my enthusiasm. Don’t let this happen to you! Instead, keep the enthusiasm going by:

1)  Reminding yourself of your top keyword phrases and developing your content strategy around those phrases.

2)  Adding content to your website that excites you and that you absolutely want to share with your users.

3)  Keeping your users in the forefront of your mind and crafting articles, blogs and web pages that generate interest in your services and YOU as a business   owner.

4)  Utilizing creative marketing and being original (don’t copy your competitors – be yourself).

5)  Praising yourself every time you move up a spot in Google (celebrate your successes).

Of all these suggestions, the last is the most powerful. You know that quote, “Every journey begins with a single step”? In the journey to achieve page one placement in Google, every time you move up a spot, it counts. You should be thrilled every time your rank improves in Google because it means you are doing things right.

With time, I started to see www.StarContentWriters.com move up in Google. I was happy when we hit page four, landed on page three, grazed the top of page two and finally hit page one. Every time we made improvements, I celebrated our achievements and it motivated me to keep going. Persistence and excitement is what made us get to the top.

External SEM Companies Need to Be Excited, Too
If you are not in charge of your search engine optimization and SEM efforts, and you are working with an external SEM/SEO company, that company needs to be excited about your successes, too.
