Blog Writing Basics

A Beginners Guide to Blog Writing

More and more people are discovering that one of the best ways they can reach a mass audience is through blog writing.  Blog writing is not only a great outlet for reaching out to an audience personally, but also a fantastic avenue for website owners and businesses to spread news, promote services and entertain their users.

The key to successful blog writing is being able to create stories and articles that are consistent, compelling and that garner the attention of users.  Experienced bloggers have little difficulty with this as they already have a core following, but others who are new to blogging often struggle.

If you are new to blogging, but would like to incorporate a blog into your website, here are some blog writing basics that may help you draft your first entry:

Determine length.  Remember, blog entries are not meant to be epic sagas!  Avid blog readers like quick, witty and short entries and they are not likely to hang around for a long read.  So, limit your word count to 300 words.  Try to say the most with the least.

Write for wandering eyes.  What does this mean?  It means have bold, catchy titles and break up your text.  Your blog needs to be scannable.  If you have a lenghy paragraph, try to break it up into smaller sections with eye-grabbing titles.  Users will generally gravitate toward a clever, prominent title than a paragraph that goes on... and on... and on.

Choose your topics wisely.  You should always try to choose topics and blog categories that you find interesting or that you have extensive knowledge in.  Yes, 300 words may not seem like a lot, but try writing that many words on a topic that you find to be utterly boring without your head slamming into your keyboard.  Better yet, try submitting an entry that lacks enthusiasm and see how many people give it a read.  If you are interested in your topic, you will put passion into your words and users will pick up on your enthusiasm, which is crucial to great blog writing.

Pick an easy blog platform.  There are so many great blogging tools out there that are very user friendly.  If you are new to blogging, you will want to pick a blogging platform that is easy to understand, navigate and set up.  I highly recommend Word Press or Blogger.com for the beginner blog writer.

By following these blog writing basics, you will be able to create blog entries that your users enjoy reading and that you truly enjoy writing!
