Five Tips to Make You a Better Blog Writer
Being a blog writer really isn’t all that hard, but it can certainly be intimidating. New blog writers always have those fears of, “What if I don’t have anything interesting to say?” and “What if no one reads it?” and, of course “What if I’m not a good writer?” To help make your blog the best it can be, follow these five simple tips.
1. Make it easy. The last thing you want to do in your blog (with very few exceptions) is weigh it down with a lot of technical jargon, preachy sales talk, or minute description. Keep it conversational. You have other places on your website for describing every last aspect of your products or services, and other places to give declarations about your mission statement or philosophy. The job of the blog content writer is to chat with your customer. Talking to them like you would in person is perfectly acceptable and even preferred. You really don’t have to worry about whether your writing is professional quality or not – if you can speak clearly, then you can be an effective blog writer.
2. Make it helpful. Think about what your customers would really like to hear or know about, and talk to them about those things in your blog. If you don’t know what to say, link to someone who does! If there’s a relevant topic you don’t know much about, ask your followers for their answers! If you can start a conversation with your blog by getting your readers to post comments, you’ll be well above the curve, and your business will see the benefit.
3. Make it clear. You don’t have to know every rule of grammar to be a successful blog content writer, but be sure you’re clear on the basics. Keep your sentences short and direct, and don’t be afraid to use dashes to connect points. Try not to clutter your post with excessive and unnecessary commas, and above all else, remember to proof read! Misspelled words and poor punctuation are markers of careless and unprofessional blog post writers – not a good message to send.
4. Make it short. Your customers most likely don’t have time or patience for long essays. Blog writers that post a few hundred words every few days will get a lot more hits than those blog post writers who post a thousand words every few weeks.
5. Make it fun! If you’re writing about something you wouldn’t bother to read about, don’t expect your customers to read about it either. Strive to meet your customers’ needs with clear, simple, relevant information, stories, or advice. If you can do that, your work as a blog writer will bring you success.
